Snow-white, quickly deserted, sandy beaches stretch for five kilometers alongside the turquoise waters of the Southern Ocean on Western Australia’s south coast. Now the website « The World’s 50 Best Beaches » has voted the pristine dream beach in the bay of Lucky Bay near Esperance (Kepa Kurl) the most beautiful beach in the world, ahead of the world-famous Anse Source d’Argent in the Seychelles. No wonder that the kangaroos also like to lie in the sun here.
Now that « The 50 Best Beaches in the World » has been officially confirmed, the locals have known for a long time. The relatively unknown beach of Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park (Mandoowernup**) in the « Australia’s Golden Outback » region is a real jewel among the dream beaches. And, by the way, also the whitest sandy beach in Australia, that’s scientifically proven. The sand, which consists of 98.9 percent pure quartz, is particularly pure and so fine that a barefoot walk feels like walking on powder. The kangaroos, who come regularly to sunbathe, also find that beach fans get their money’s worth here. If you don’t want to lie side and side with the little shy marsupials in the sun, you can go snorkeling, surfing and fishing. To enjoy the beach in its full splendor and for more than just a few hours, an overnight stay at Lucky Bay Campground is recommended.
Visitors can also experience the bubblegum-pink Lake Hillier on Middle Island from the air on a scenic flight from Esperance. Cape Le Grand National Park also offers numerous bush walks or shore-based spotting of dolphins surfing the waves of the Southern Ocean. Between July and October, humpback, southern right and blue whales also cruise off the coast of Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park.
Two other Western Australian coves also made the top 50, Little Hellfire Bay (#28), also in Esperance, and Turquoise Bay in Exmouth on Ningaloo Reef (#17). They were chosen for their gorgeous shades of blue and uncrowded, tranquil surroundings . Only one other beach Down Under outside of Western Australia made the list: Whitehaven Beach in Queensland.
Esperance Island Cruises’ Jaimen Hudson, who has photographed spectacular natural landscapes around the world, confirms that the beaches around Esperance are unrivaled anywhere in the world: “The beaches at Esperance are simply amazing, unique in the world. We organize tours here every day and our guests are always quick to say that there is something magical about this place that is our home. With the turquoise water and white sand, we really do live in a coastal paradise.”
